Evolution of Quranic Commentaries in Urdu Literature: Research Review

Abstract

Tafsir-ul-Quran is an achievement of Muslims which is unparalleled in any other civilization. Quranic commentaries (Tafasir) have been written in various languages of the world to highlight every aspect of Quran. Urdu Commentary literature has played major role in the development and evolution of Urdu literature. A large collection of Urdu literature consists of Urdu commentary literature. The number of translations and commentaries of the Holy Quran in Urdu language is constantly increasing. The number of Urdu Quranic translations and commentaries is almost one thousand. Arabic commentaries Besides, the collection of Urdu commentaries is found more than any other language in the world. New styles of Urdu translations and commentaries of the Holy Quran are emerging continuously. The style of each Urdu translation and commentary of Quran is unique and heartwarming. In this article, only a brief review of Tafsir-ul-Quran, Zia-ul-Quran, Maarf-ul-Quran, Tafhim-ul-Quran and some other selected Urdu commentaries has been presented.
