The Starting Point of Children's Literature: Lullaby

Abstract

In children’s literature, ‘lullaby’ is such a genre that no set rules and regulations for critical appreciation but there is no denying the fact that it has been part and parcel of all lingos and civilizations in its different forms and manifestations.  In poetic style, usually mothers sing some utterances to send their children to sleep is not just a routine phenomenon but it is the starting point of children’s literature on the one hand but on the other hand, it adores the kids with fragrance of motherhood alongside connecting them with ties of cultural values in an unconscious manner and later, it leads the kids to build edifice of their personality on it. This folk song with some slight alterations, in various languages with its existence for thousands of centuries, has in its tradition some forms wherein mothers sing lullabies to frighten their babies but it depends on the believes and faiths of the people living in a peculiar region.   The truth is that ‘lullaby’ is such a dialogue between mom and baby which due to its onomatopoeic   and magical effect casts a durable and rich impact.  Like others lingos of the world, Urdu too enjoys a strong tradition of ‘lullaby’.
